Carteret, New Jersey (June 29, 2026) – A tractor-trailer driver was killed early Thursday morning following a fiery multi-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in Carteret. The fatal accident occurred at approximately 4:07 a.m. on June 25 along the northbound inner roadway near milepost 96.2.
According to the New Jersey State Police, a preliminary investigation determined that four Freightliner tractor-trailers were traveling north when two trucks were stopped in the right lane, and a third tractor-trailer was stopped in the center lane. Authorities said a fourth Freightliner struck the rear of the stopped tractor-trailers, causing three of the commercial vehicles to become fully engulfed in flames. The force of the collision also pushed the trucks stopped in the right lane into another rear-end collision.
The driver of the fourth tractor-trailer suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of family members.
