Richland County, SC (May 11, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle along Interstate 20 in Richland County, leading to multiple felony charges against a Columbia man, according to authorities.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol , the fatal crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on May 9 along Interstate 20 eastbound near the 75 mile marker. Investigators said the collision involved a 2002 Lexus sedan, a 2021 Ford van, and a pedestrian.
Authorities reported the Lexus was disabled on the shoulder of Interstate 20 while the pedestrian was refueling the vehicle. Troopers said the Ford van traveled off the roadway and struck both the pedestrian and the disabled Lexus.
The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Officials stated the victim’s identity has not yet been released by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators said the driver of the Ford fled the scene following the collision and was later involved in a second crash. Authorities identified the driver as William Gunter, 42, who was subsequently arrested and charged with felony leaving the scene of a collision with death, felony DUI, leaving the scene of a collision with property damage, and simple possession of marijuana.
Officials reported the passenger inside the Lexus was not injured. Gunter sustained injuries during the second collision and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
