Norfolk, NE (May 29, 2025) – A deadly crash in Madison County claimed the life of one person early Wednesday morning following a collision between a pickup truck and a backhoe near Norfolk.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. on May 28 at the intersection of Highway 81 and 833rd Road (Enola Road). The Nebraska State Patrol says the backhoe was crossing westbound on 833rd Road when it was hit by a pickup traveling north on Highway 81.
The impact fatally injured the backhoe operator, a resident of Norfolk, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their identities have not yet been made public.
Foggy conditions were reported in the area at the time of the crash, which authorities noted as a contributing hazard. Northbound lanes of Highway 81 were shut down temporarily while first responders directed traffic through a single open lane.
