Encinitas, CA (October 9, 2025) – A child was hospitalized after a pickup truck plowed into a downtown gelato shop in Encinitas on Wednesday evening, leaving behind significant damage and serious concern.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 6 p.m. on October 8 at Gelato 101 in the 400 block of South Coast Highway 101 near D Street. Authorities say 56-year-old Edward De La Torre was behind the wheel of a 2026 Chevy Silverado traveling north when he rear-ended a 2022 Toyota Prius. The impact sent his truck crashing through the front of the shop.
A young boy seated inside the shop with his family was pinned under the vehicle after it burst through the entrance. Emergency crews quickly responded and managed to free the child, who was conscious and breathing before being transported to the hospital.
De La Torre sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
